D A I L E

N o plans were set in stone yet for my, umm, dates with Wade and Mick. I was starting to get antsy about it, but I didn’t want to overwhelm either one of them, so I kept my anxiety to myself.

The truth was, I was really looking forward to some escapism. A night where I let everything else slip away and just enjoyed the moment with each one of them.

The mood around the hospital had started to get back to normal. That was what I had observed on my first afternoon and evening shift after the basketball game with the guys. When you’re working the graveyard shift, things always seemed like they were up in the air. Detached from normal, everyday life. I liked to spend those hours at the hospital and have the daytime off, even if it was only to sleep in. I certainly didn’t mind the solitude.

But today? Today felt like finally having air after holding my breath for an eternity.

“Daile, why don’t you take your dinner break?” Dr. Petra looked up from behind the clipboard in his hands. “It’s a slow night.”

“Really?” I didn’t even try to hide my delight, so I beamed. “That would be great.”

“Go for it.” He tsk ed at me and clicked the pen he was holding three times. “I’ll page you if you’re needed back immediately. If not, feel free to stay a little longer than your hour.”

“I’m starting to think you’re trying to get rid of me,” I joked.

“Today is calm and peaceful. I think we should all take a moment to appreciate that,” Dr. Petra answered in an even, measured tone.

“You’re right,” I admitted. “Okay, well, I’m gonna go then.”

“I’ll see you when you get back.” Tthen he hid behind the clipboard again, annotating the margins of the paper in front of him. “Oh, uh, I don’t know if they told you this, but it’s best not to leave the hospital. Things are safer inside, believe it or not.”

I nodded absentmindedly. Straight ahead of where we were, right at the end of the hall, stood Jake. I’d seen him skulking around here and there throughout my shift, but he’d barely said two words to me. It occurred to me that maybe Mick or Wade — or, worse, Mick and Wade — had both let him know that they each had dates with me. I had already gone through this same exact fear before, so this was an occasion for a weird bout of déjà vu.

“Daile?” Dr. Petra called.

“I won’t go anywhere,” I said to him. “Excuse me.”

I jogged down the hall, working very hard to draw as little attention as possible. Ever since that day in the private room with Wade, I had put in extra effort to appear inconspicuous. When you had something good going for you, the last thing you wanted was to advertise it.

“Jake,” I hissed, tightening my pace.

He looked up with a confused expression plastered across his face, like he’d just woken up from a dream.
